How to Rock a Vintage Look This Winter

by La Petite Pinup

With the cold spells snapping at our heels as winter fast approaches, it can sometimes feel like achieving a vintage look is a bit of a challenge, but with our handy guide, you’ll be in style this season!

Layer up!
Always layer your clothes for maximum warmth. So don’t shy away from that 50s dress you love but feel you can’t wear because it’s too cold! A knitted cardigan over a dress is the classic look, but also consider other methods of layering too. Pop a long sleeved blouse or thin jumper underneath your dress for additional layers. I also really like wearing a gathered skirt over a pencil or swing dress, especially if I love the top half of a dress but want a fuller or less formal skirt, or to add more details to the bottom if it’s a block colour. It also keeps you extra warm too when you double up!

All dressed up!
A dress in a thicker fabric, with long sleeves or full length will keep you warmer during the colder months, so try some of the new vintage winter dresses from the collection. They’ll keep those frosty chills at bay while looking fabulous, and there are so many new styles to choose from; with winter checks and stripes, cute woodland and floral themes and an array of sumptuous velvets that are out of this world!

Get your coat!
Whether it’s a capejacket or a full length coat, there’s a style to compliment every outfit from the great choice of retro winter jackets and coats on the website. The Marcia jacket with it’s faux fur trim to the front is the perfect addition if you need something lighter. For full length cosiness, throw over a fabulous Pearl or Jackie Princess coat to feel super snug in the elements while looking effortlessly glam. A cape coat is a great crossover too as the cape can be worn on its own when the weather is a little warmer, or over the coat for added warmth on the coldest of days.

Don’t lose your head!
Our heads lose heat like nobody’s business when we’re out, so keep them covered with a chic beret or hat. If the wind is whipping up, a snood is the best hair accessory to tame tresses while keeping that classic 40s aesthetic. Nobody wants to spend time on their hair, only to walk out the door and your hair immediately stand vertically from the gusts! Tucking your locks in a snood is such a great way to avoid this as well as looking perfectly retro. Gloves and scarves are a must too and there’s a range of cute new styles available to tie in with your 50s clothing.

Step out in style!
The right footwear always makes such a big difference to an outfit. You want to look the part but also be comfortable and avoid frozen tootsies.
A walk outside can do wonders especially in these unusual times, on your socially distanced ventures we’ve got you covered.  Lulu Hun has such a great variety of perfect vintage styles this season. Ankle boots are a great all rounder for winter as they always work so well with swing or pencil options, as well as trousers. Not only keeping your feet warm (maybe add an extra pair of socks too if you want), but the designs are really reminiscent of the era. If you prefer a shoe over a boot, there are lots of gorgeous new heeled styles too. The block heels are amazing as you can walk for miles, even on cobbles, and not feel the pinch!

Hope you’ve enjoyed seeing some of the ways you can put these key items together to create some warm but fabulous layered outfits this season, and rock your way through winter!
