A tea dress has a fitted bodice, a defined waist and a softly flared skirt that falls below the knee — the everyday dress of the 1930s and 1940s. Collectif's tea dresses keep those proportions in UK sizes 6 to 26.

What Makes a Tea Dress
The length. Tea dresses finish below the knee or at mid-calf — tea length — which is what separates them from a shorter day dress.
The skirt. Softly flared rather than full. It moves without the volume of a swing dress and without the narrow line of a pencil dress.
The prints. Small-scale florals and polka dots, in keeping with the 1930s and 1940s originals.
Styling a Tea Dress
Tea dresses were built for daytime, so they take simple styling: a fitted cardigan from our knitwear range, a belt at the natural waist and low heels. For a fuller 1950s line, a petticoat adds lift, though the shape does not need one. See the full 1940s range for matching separates.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a tea dress?
A tea dress is a day dress with a fitted bodice, a defined waist and a softly flared skirt that falls below the knee. The style became common in the 1930s and 1940s as an easy-to-wear dress for afternoon and daytime occasions.
What is the difference between a tea dress and a tea gown?
A tea gown was a loose, floor-length Edwardian garment worn at home without a corset. A tea dress is the later, shorter and more fitted day dress that followed it. The two names are often confused, but the garments are not the same.
What do you wear to a tea party?
A tea-length dress in a small floral or polka dot print, with low heels and simple jewellery. The dress code is usually smart daytime rather than evening, so keep fabrics matte and hemlines below the knee.
Are these genuine vintage tea dresses?
No. Collectif designs new, vintage-inspired dresses based on 1930s and 1940s shapes, made with modern fabrics and modern sizing.
